For the month of September and well into October, Immanuel will dive into a new worship series titled, “The Beautiful Life-Giving Way.” This title reflects the mission statement of Immanuel in that we believe the way of Jesus is genuinely beautiful, full of grace, wonder and deep care for people. The series will start September 6 as we explore Immanuel’s “way” then dive deep into the wholeness, wonder, authenticity belonging, generosity and lavish grace that follows in Jesus’ footsteps and makes Immanuel UMC who we are.

To compliment this series, the theme song will be “Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life,” with lyrics by George Herbert and music by Ralph Vaughn Williams (1872-1958). It was originally part of larger work titled “Five Mystical Songs,” that is devoted to Christ’s resurrection and the cornerstone of Christianity. Although Williams was an atheist in his early life, he was inspired throughout his life by much of the liturgy and music of the Anglican church, the language of the King James Bible, and the visionary qualities of religious verse such as Herbert’s. He later declared himself a cheerful agnostic.

The text of what is sometimes referred to as “The Call” invites the spirit of Jesus into the singer’s soul with each stanza starting with the word, “Come,” and follows with language that reflects the spirit of Immanuel using phrases such as light, feast, strength, joy and love. Subsequent phrases in each of the three stanzas reinforces the opening words reflecting what is in Christ’s heart...the never-ending feast the Kingdom, and the love and joy that none can part. It is a beautifully constructed piece in 6/8 time that gives it a lullaby feel as we cradle ourselves in the love and mission of Christ and continue His work in the world today.
