This is always a bittersweet day for me. I'm excited because it's the last day; I'm bummed because it's the last day. We've had some amazing, frustrating, enlightening, funny experiences this week, both collectively and as individuals. We've made new friends and deepened existing friendships. Our hearts have all been touched and many of us have been changed forever.
Today a group of us returned to King Adult Day Enrichment Program (KADEP), which I wrote about yesterday. We had another amazing day, helping the staff and the clients with morning stretches, therapeutic exercises, games, art, and an "Olympic Games". We all got to know most of the staff and the clients and were remarking to each other how impressed we were with the incredible kindness of the staff and their ability to deal with persons with a range of special needs from mild to severe. We were also impressed with the humor and optimism expressed by the clients, who have chosen to deal with their situation in that way rather than being bitter and depressed. We were thankful to have the opportunity to help out with this important work.
The majority of our group went to Colfax Community Network (CCN). CCN runs a summer camp for kids who live in the motels along Colfax. These are people who are essentially homeless, living in the inexpensive motels for a day or two at a time when they can scrape together enough money. Our group helped serve lunch, played games with them, and helped create art with a group of 25 kids ranging in age from 5 to 12 years of age. They also helped out with a field trip to tour Mile High Stadium, where the Denver Broncos play football. For our football fans, this may have been the highlight of the trip ;-).
Tonight we're getting packed and cleaning the facilities for an early departure and hopefully safe drive home. Thanks to all of you for following our progress and supporting us with your thoughts and prayers.
The 2012 Volunteers in Mission Trip was held June 24-30, 2012. 22 Immanuel members travelled to Denver, CO, to work in a variety of mission opportunities in connection with Denver Urban Ministries' (DenUM) Urban Education Program.
